cz-17th November – Day of the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy

09.12.2025

Today we commemorate November 17, a day that is one of the most important milestones in modern Czech history. The events of 1939 and especially 1989 remind us of the power of civic courage, the desire for freedom, and the unity of society that stood up for its values.

A significant figure inseparably linked to this day is Václav Havel – a playwright, dissident, statesman, and symbol of nonviolent resistance. His life and ideas continue to inspire with their humanity, humility, and unwavering faith in truth and democracy. Havel reminds us that democracy is not a given, but a commitment that must be nurtured every day.

November 17 is thus not only a memory of the past but also a call to active citizenship, mutual respect, and responsibility for the world we live in.

May the legacy of freedom, decency, and courage remain alive in today's society.
